Their Ugliness, His Righteousness
“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere and that an uprising was beginning, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”
All the people answered, “His blood is on us and our children!” (Matthew 27:22-25 NIV)
I don’t suppose the raging crowd knew the depth of the words they spoke. Yes, his blood would be on them and their children, but not just in the way they imagined it. Although they were completely unworthy, Jesus would pour out His blood for them. His redemptive, sacrificial blood would cover those who came to believe He was the Son of God, forgiving them of all their sins, and washing them white as snow. Their ugliness and His response to it, proved His righteousness.
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
Hallelujah!
Biblical Truths:
"Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the World!" -John 1:29
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him." -John 3:16-17
Pause and Reflect:
Jeremiah 17:9 NASB1995 reminds us "The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?"
If you had been in the crowd that day, what would have been your response? Would you have recognized Jesus as the Son of God and gone against the raging mob? Or would you have most likely joined in with the chants to crucify Him?
Take a moment to repent of your sins. Thank God and His Son, Jesus, for the ultimate sacrifice that ensured your eternity in Heaven.
Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us in spite of our sinful hearts. Thank you for sending your Son, Jesus to bear the consequence of our sins. Thank you for the promise you have given us of an eternity in Heaven with you.
